Faculty Bio

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is Full Professor at the Instituto de Ciências Jurídico-Políticas (ICJP) of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon where he read for his PhD and of which he is the current Dean. He is currently the President of the Scientific Council of the Centro de Investigação em Direito Público (CIDP). He was also a Chairholder at the Faculty of Law of the Portuguese Catholic University and Invited professor of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the same university. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is a widely known politician and a distinguished public intellectual and political analyst, having occupied various position of high public relevance, among which are those of the President of the Portuguese Social Democratic Party (PSD) and member of the State Council. Abroad, he was the negotiator of the draft of the Faculty of Law of Bissau. He is the author of numerous scientific works and member of several national and international juridical associations. He has been awarded for his juridical activity with the Comenda da Ordem de Santiago de Espada and in 2005 with the Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique. In 1972, he co-founded the weekly newspaper “Expresso” and was part of the commission which elaborated the Law of the Press which is still in force, having also acted as deputy of the national assembly and a member of the first Portuguese delegation to the Council of Europe. His biography, with his name as the title, has just been released by Vitor Matos. Amongst his academic and non-academic writings we should mention the various volumes of Direito Administrativo Geral as well as the titles Crónicas da Revolução, Responsabilidade Civil Administrativa, Introdução ao Estudo do Direito (co-authored) and the acclaimed journal Cadernos de Ciência de Legislação which he co-directs. Together with Paulo Otero and Fausto Quadros, he coordinated the title Estudos de Homenagem ao Professor Doutor Jorge Miranda.
